Laser Treatment

LASER stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The use of lasers has been a popular method to treat a range of physical conditions in modern day medicine. It is a non-invasive, safe treatment that involves the application of low powered lasers or light-emitting diodes (LED’s) at specific wavelengths to the surface of the body. Laser emits no heat, sound or vibration but the enhanced light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum so creates energy. The energy created by the specific wavelength of light changes the biological and physiological activity of the cells which accelerates and stimulates healing through regeneration and repair of tissues as well as reducing inflammation, which results in a reduction of pain and swelling.

Who is suitable for Laser Therapy?

Anyone suffering from acute or chronic pain can qualify for this treatment. After a thorough assessment we will be able to establish if laser will be a beneficial part of your treatment plan and recovery.

Conditions that are commonly treated include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Shoulder impingement
  • Hip Bursitis
  • Lower back disc degeneration
  • Disc herniation
  • Sciatica
  • Neuropathic pain
  • Tendinopathy
  • Tennis/ golfers elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Muscle fatigue

Sessions

The amount of sessions you will need will depend on your condition and its severity. Each treatment usually lasts anywhere between 5-10 minutes and on average 8-12 sessions are recommended to get the cumulative effect of laser treatment, but for more chronic or persistent cases the requirement may be more.

Laser treatment is pain-free. You may feel slight pressure or heat applied to the target area, however, this should feel soothing and not be uncomfortable.

Very occasionally a body will ‘over react’ to the laser treatment and you will experience a temporary increase in inflammation, usually lasting 24-48 hours.  However, this is rare but if it does happen, please don’t worry, it’s just the body’s way of indicating that a process is underway in your area of pain. If this does happens, please tell your clinician and they will reduce the settings on the machine for your next treatment.

There may be immediate pain relief, but it is more likely you will start seeing positive results after 3-4 sessions. You are more likely to see results as you go through the course and at the end of your treatment. It is important to be diligent with any other elements of your treatment plan such as exercise and activity modification to allow for the best results possible.
