Varicose Vein & Thread Vein Treatment

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are swollen and enlarged veins – usually blue or dark purple, that can occur anywhere on the body but most commonly on the legs. Although not considered a serious medical condition they can be uncomfortable and can lead to more serious problems.  Around one in three people have varicose veins, with women being four times more likely to develop the condition than men.  The symptoms of varicose veins include heavy & restless legs, swollen ankles & feet, dry skin, muscle cramps, pain or itching over a prominent vein or colour changes in the lower leg.

What are thread veins?

Thread veins are small blood vessels which, when dilated, become visible on the top layer of skin giving a spidery pattern.  They affect around 80% of adults and occur most commonly on the legs but can also appear on the face, chest or hands.  Thread veins occur when the one-way valves that allow blood to flow back up towards the heart become weakened and malfunction.  This results in blood pooling in smaller non-functional veins.  Causes include pregnancy, sitting/standing for long periods, obesity, hormone fluctuations, heredity, age and underlying conditions.

Types of treatment

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

This treatment is a form of Endothermal Ablation and is recommended as the first line of treatment by The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence.  RFA is generally performed alongside Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (see below) under local anaesthetic.

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS)

This treatment is recommended for more troublesome vein conditions.  It is generally performed alongside Radiofrequnecy Ablation (see above) under local anaesthetic.  UGFS uses a clever foam injection (called Fibrovein) to treat your veins.

Microsclerotherapy –  spider / thread veins only

Is the most effective treatment for spider veins (thread veins) on the legs and feet.  This procedure is performed without anaesthetic.  Microsclerotherapy uses a light and a very fine needle to inject the veins with a foam mixture that helps the body to absorb them naturally.  The procedure usually takes only one-hour per leg, and a bandage and compression stocking is then applied.  You should start to see an improvement within eight weeks, however, it can take up to 18 months to achieve full cosmetic results.  Therefore, patients may need more than one treatment (we recommend on average 2 – 3 sessions per leg).

“Two months on from my treatment and there’s a big improvement in how my leg looks and feels.  Very happy with all stages of the process, starting with the free mini consultation (great idea), the treatment itself, advice on aftercare, and the follow up appointment.  Everything was clearly explained – would highly recommend.”

“Throughout my treatment I was extremely impressed by the kindness of the consultant who treated me.  He explained everything in detail and made sure I understood the before and after procedure, which helped reduce any anxiety which I had.”
