Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in ancient India, aiming to unite the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga is suitable for all ages and abilities because it can be adapted to suit individual needs and goals. Additionally, yoga can be modified or modified to accommodate physical disabilities, making it accessible to everyone.

At Revival Health and Wellbeing Centre, we offer a weekly Yoga class on a Monday evening from 6.30pm-7.30pm, led by our expert instructor, Sofia Santos.

Flexibility

Yoga can improve flexibility by increasing the range of motion in joints, lengthening muscles and enhancing the body’s ability to move freely. Additionally, yoga’s focus on breathing and relaxation techniques helps to reduce muscle tension and increase blood flow, which can also contribute to greater flexibility.

Balance

Yoga can improve balance by strengthening the core muscles, increasing flexibility, and enhancing proprioception (the ability to sense the position and movement of the body). Through various yoga poses, you engage your core muscles to maintain balance and stability, which helps to improve overall balance and reduce the risk of falls. Additionally, yoga’s focus on slow and controlled movements allows you to develop a greater sense of body awareness, enabling you to better sense your body’s position and make adjustments to maintain balance.

Stress Relief

Whether it is work, an impending deadline or home life, we can all feel stressed from time to time. Yoga’s combination of stretching, deep breathing and meditation helps to put your mind and body into a deep state of relaxation, which reduce cortisol levels – the body’s stress hormone.

Yoga postures and breathing exercises can also release muscle tension and increase blood circulation, alleviating physical symptoms of stress like headaches and back pain.

Heart Health

The ancient practice can improve heart health by reducing blood pressure, improving circulation and increasing oxygenation of the body. Regular yoga practice has been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease by strengthening the heart, improving cardiovascular function, and reducing inflammation.

“Yoga is the practice of quieting your mind”

Strength

By starting with simple poses, you will build your strength up in your arms, legs and core. This is an excellent way to integrate strength training into your fitness routine without relying on weights — instead, yoga focuses on body weight to improve strength levels.

Energy

Yoga’s focus on mindful movement and deep breathing can increase energy levels by stimulating the release of endorphins, also known as “feel-good” hormones, which can help counteract fatigue and leave you feeling more energised and refreshed.

Breathing

Yoga offers a low-impact, gentle approach that can be adapted to various physical abilities and fitness levels. Yoga emphasises deep, mindful breathing techniques, which can help to strengthen the respiratory muscles and increase lung capacity. Certain yoga poses can also help open up the chest and improve posture, further enhancing breathing function.

Sleep

Sleep is essential for the body to repair and restore itself, support the immune system and improve brain function. Additionally, sleep helps to regulate our emotions, reducing stress and anxiety and improving our overall mood and well-being.

Regular yoga practice can be a powerful tool in improving the quality and quantity of sleep, it can help regulate the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, also known as the circadian rhythm, by stimulating the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep. By incorporating yoga into your daily routine, you can experience improved sleep quality, reduced insomnia, and a deeper sense of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Social

Participating in yoga classes can ease loneliness and provide an environment for group healing and support. Even during one-on-one sessions loneliness is reduced as one is acknowledged as a unique individual, being listened to and participating in the creation of a personalised yoga plan. Additionally, yoga can help reduce feelings disconnection by increasing self-awareness, self-compassion and emotional regulation, allowing individuals to better navigate their relationships and build stronger connections with others.
