Dizziness and Vertigo

Do you experience dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness or feel off balance?

These symptoms can be unsettling and may affect your confidence, mobility and everyday activities. Whether it’s feeling dizzy when turning your head, struggling to walk in busy environments or experiencing a sensation that the room is spinning, vestibular symptoms can have a significant impact on your quality of life.
The good news is that specialist Vestibular Physiotherapy can help reduce symptoms, improve balance and restore confidence in movement.

What is the vestibular system?

The vestibular system is our body’s balance system, located within the inner ear. It works closely with our eyes, muscles, joints and brain to help us maintain balance, coordinate movement and keep our vision steady when we move our head.
When this system isn’t functioning correctly, the brain can receive confusing information, leading to symptoms such as:
  • Dizziness or vertigo (a spinning sensation)
  • Unsteadiness or poor balance
  • Blurred or disturbed vision during movement
  • Nausea or motion sensitivity
  • Difficulty walking, particularly in busy environments
  • Reduced confidence and fear of falling
These symptoms can occur with conditions such as Vestibular neuritis, Labyrinthitis, Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), Vestibular migraine, Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD), Menieres and other inner ear or balance disorders.

What is Vestibular Rehabilitation?

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialised form of Physiotherapy that uses carefully prescribed exercises to improve balance, reduce dizziness and help people return to their normal activities.
One of the most fascinating aspects of Vestibular Rehabilitation is the brain’s ability to adapt and retrain itself, a process known as Neuroplasticity.
When the vestibular system isn’t working properly, the brain can learn to compensate by making better use of information from the eyes, muscles and joints. Through specific exercises and repeated movement, we can encourage these natural processes, helping the brain adapt to changes in the balance system.

How does Vestibular Physiotherapy work?

Following a detailed assessment, your physiotherapist will develop an individualised rehabilitation programme based on your symptoms, the underlying condition and your personal goals.
Treatment may include:
Gaze stabilisation exercises: these help improve your ability to keep your vision clear and focused while moving your head, reducing symptoms such as blurred vision or dizziness.
Balance and walking exercises: these challenge your balance system in a controlled way, helping improve stability, coordination and confidence during everyday movements.
Habituation exercises: certain movements or environments may trigger dizziness. Gradual, repeated exposure to these triggers can help the brain become less sensitive to them over time.
Movement and functional training: rehabilitation may include activities such as walking while turning your head, navigating different surfaces or combining movement with other tasks. These exercises help prepare your balance system for the demands of everyday life.
For certain conditions such as BPPV, specific repositioning manoeuvres may also be used to treat positional vertigo.

Why is a personalised approach important?

No two people experience dizziness or balance problems in exactly the same way.
Research highlights the importance of tailoring vestibular rehabilitation to the individual, particularly when symptoms have persisted for some time.
Recovery is not simply about improving balance while standing still. It’s about helping you feel confident moving around, walking outdoors, shopping, working and enjoying the activities that matter to you.
Exercises are therefore carefully progressed as your symptoms and abilities improve. Some may temporarily provoke mild dizziness, but your physiotherapist will guide you to ensure rehabilitation is appropriate, manageable and safe.
