Let’s jump into today’s spotlight!
Steve Bailey, 57
Steve has been a loyal member of Revival Gym since October 2023.
Hi Steve. Let’s get started with some questions! What was the turning point that motivated you to start your fitness journey?
SB – The turning point for me was twofold. Firstly, I was already going through a rehabilitation program for my knee following initial physio treatment from Claire at Revival. Secondly, I remember feeling constantly tired and out of breath after simple activities such as climbing the stairs at home or out for a walk with my wife and our two dogs. One day, I looked in the mirror and decided that enough was enough. I wanted to feel strong, healthy, and confident. That decision marked the beginning of my fitness journey, and I haven’t looked back since. Finally, having the unwavering support of my wife and family made all the difference, encouraging me to stay committed and focused.
What changes—big or small—made the biggest difference for you?
SB – The biggest difference came from embracing small, consistent changes. I began by adding more natural, unprocessed foods into my diet, reduced my intake of alcohol, keeping an eye on my calorie intake and gradually increased my physical activity. Instead of drastic changes, I focused on building sustainable habits, like drinking more water, getting more sleep, and finding workouts and exercise that I really enjoy. These small steps added up to significant improvements over time.
What kept you motivated on the toughest days of your journey?
SB – On the toughest days, I reminded myself of my own “why”. I regularly reviewed my progress and visualised my future self which kept me going. Additionally, surrounding myself with supportive people and celebrating even the smallest wins helped me stay motivated. Most importantly, the encouragement and support from my wife and family were invaluable, providing me with the strength to push through challenging times. I also found it helpful to set small, achievable goals, such as cycling for an extra 10 minutes or lifting a slightly heavier weight which kept me challenged.
What role did Revival play in your transformation?
SB – Revival have played a crucial role in my transformation. Having a well-equipped and available gym in the village has made it easier to stay the course. The PT instructors have also provided personalized guidance and support, helping me set realistic goals. In addition, the positive and encouraging environment at Revival makes working out enjoyable and something I looked forward to. Finally, their holistic approach to fitness, including nutrition advice and mental wellness, ensures that I continue to make progress in all aspects of my health.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their fitness journey?
SB – My advice to anyone starting their fitness journey is to be patient and realistic. Progress takes time, and it’s important to celebrate every small achievement along the way. Find activities that you enjoy and make fitness a part of your lifestyle rather than a chore. Surround yourself with supportive people, especially your family if possible, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, every step you take brings you closer to your goals, and having the support of loved ones can make the journey much more rewarding. Also, don’t be discouraged by setbacks; they are a natural part of the process. Focus on consistency rather than perfection, and you’ll see progress over time.
